UTS Blake Library

Textbook example of large, complex upgrade

The University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) Blake Library in Ultimo required a major upgrade of mechanical, fire and electrical services including BCA upgrade and smoke management system, as well as additional floorspace for students. This complex project included the relocation of approximately 13 linear kilometres of books from three levels of the library. Major works included the installation of two, seven tonne, air cooled chillers.

Timeline compressed to 10 weeks

With the project timeline compressed from 22 weeks to ten weeks, SHAPE selected skilled crews and programmed long shifts. Our team remained close to the client throughout the project, keeping them involved in all planning decisions. The scope of works was broad and included installing two, seven tonne air cooled chillers on a new roof mounted structural platform. Efficient materials handling was achieved with an external temporary hoist system. SHAPE also packed, transported and stored many thousands of books, then replaced them in correct classification order.
